    dr don hughes, orthopedic surgeon southern new mexico surgery centerDr. Don Hughes relocated to the New Mexico area from San Angelo, Texas. He is happy to join the Alamogordo and Ruidoso medical communities at Alamogordo Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Hughes is board certified in orthopedic surgery; his specialties include sports medicine, knee and shoulder arthroscopy and reconstruction and total joint replacement. Dr. Hughes has served as a team physician at Angelo State University, the San Angelo Colts baseball team and the San Angelo Outlaws hockey team. Dr. Hughes has served as team athletic physician for a number of high schools as well.

    Dr. Hughes completed his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University and his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He went on to complete his surgical internship at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Bexar County Hospital. Following his surgical internship, Dr. Hughes served as Flight Surgeon in the US Air Force and was stationed in Virginia, Thailand, Vietnam. After his service with the Air Force, Dr. Hughes went on to complete his residency at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. During his career, Dr. Hughes has served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff for the San Angelo Community Medical Center.

    Dr. Hughes is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeon, the Texas Orthopedics Association and Texas Society of Sports Medicine.

    Dr. Hughes lives in Alto and enjoys spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His hobbies include golf, hunting and maintaining his ranch back in San Angelo, Tx.
